What is a Root Canal?
A root canal treatment is performed to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or has become infected. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.
Signs you may need a root canal:
- Spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting
- Sensitivity to hot and cold foods
- Severe decay or an injury that creates an abscess (infection) in the bone
Infected/Inflamed Pulp Tissue
"Root canal" refers to the natural cavity found in the center of the tooth. The pulp chamber contains the tooth's nerve. When the internal soft tissue becomes infected, it can result in serious complications if left untreated.
A root canal procedure (technically called a pulpectomy) is an endodontic treatment that disinfects and refills the inside of the tooth β eliminating pain and preserving the tooth structure. In the past, a damaged tooth like this would have needed extraction. Today, root canal treatment saves the tooth.
The Root Canal Treatment Procedure
The tooth is first anesthetized, then a small opening is made into the pulp. Dr. Sheth uses precision instruments to remove the remaining pulp and thoroughly disinfect the tooth canal. Once disinfected, the interior of the tooth is filled with an inert material that prevents further infection.
At Planet Family Dental, Dr. Sheth is trained to perform endodontic treatment with a gentle, patient-focused approach. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is.
